The Banyan Place Studio is a vibrant intersection of art, culture, and creativity — powerful forces that bring people together and shape the soul of our cities.
Through public art, we foster connection, inspire dialogue, and help communities express their unique identities in meaningful and lasting ways. By combining thoughtful strategy, artistic collaboration, and a commitment to excellence, collaboratively we help create timeless, meaningful, and inclusive public spaces. My passion ranges from master planning and public art strategy to artist engagement and community-driven projects. We work with you to shape environments that are vibrant, livable, and deeply connected to the people they serve.
This is the foundation we stand on — a shared belief that creativity can transform the everyday into the extraordinary.
Swapna Parab, principal and owner of the Banyan Place Studio, has over twenty-five years of professional experience in design, place making, art and architecture. Her work is rooted in the visual narratives she has encountered through a life shaped by movement and transition. Having left the land of her birth—and with it, the generational roots that shaped her—she found herself navigating the stark realities of a new country. This transition sparked a journey of self-exploration and self-revival, one that continues to unfold through her art.
From the crossroads of cultures and identities, she reflects on the loss of language, the fading scents of once-familiar cities, and the distant echoes of sounds that once defined home. Her creative process is intuitive and layered, spanning sketching, painting, and mixed-media collage. Each medium offers a distinct lens through which she explores the world, deciphering its layers and uncovering the stories embedded within. Her work serves as a visual diary of cultural intersections, personal transitions, and the geopolitical landscapes she witnesses. Deeply inspired by cities—their histories, communities, neighborhoods, and their delicate balance with nature—Swapna brings an architect’s eye to her compositions. Though not formally trained as an artist, her background in architecture informs her structural approach and fuels her fascination with urban life. What began as a personal interest in sketching and painting has evolved into a layered practice of storytelling through form, texture, and color. For her, this process is not merely about creating images; it is a way of making sense of displacement, memory, and belonging.
Her dedication to art and design extends into education and community engagement. She has taught undergraduate design studios at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and led architectural sketching workshops at AIA national conventions. She has also served as a juror for the City of Fairfax’s Spotlight on the Arts, reviewing over 250 artworks. Currently, she serves as President of the Fairfax Art League, where she leads a variety of art education initiatives and public programs. Known as a warm and engaging public speaker, Swapna offers practical, encouraging insights to help others thrive in their creative pursuits. She frequently exhibits her work in Fairfax, USA.
Beyond her studio practice, Swapna is passionate about revitalizing cities and neighborhoods through public art. As the lead architect on several large-scale infrastructure projects, she has collaborated with artists to integrate creative public art into the built environment. Notable contributions include 15 public art installations along the Dulles Metrorail Silver Line in Northern Virginia and 22 projects at MTA Purple Line stations in Maryland—each reflecting her commitment to blending architecture, community identity, and artistic expression.
